However, it is evident that Owen has twisted this traditional interpretation by describing the lack of christian love that the soldiers recieve. Ordinarily, we associate sonnets with ‘love’, and more so christianity’s idea of love in particular. ‘guns’, ‘stuttering rifles’, ‘shrills’, ‘wailing shells’ are a strong choice onomatopoeia sounds, which gives us an insight to the unpleasantness of life in the trenches, which is what Owen aimed to achieve. In ‘Anthem for doomed youth’, there is a focus on sounds, which is a key incorporation in many of Owens poems. The word ‘boy’ at the end of the title emphasises the innocence and the youth of the soldiers,similar to ‘youth’ in ‘Anthem for doomed youth’. Therefore we can conclude that the theme of the poem is ‘wasted youth’, much like another of Owens poems ‘Arms and the boy’. ‘Doomed’ means not being able to fufil your destiny ahead and ‘youth’ is an emphasis of soldiers age and innocence. ‘Anthem’ is a song that is very well known, usually strong and powerful. They typically have 14 lines, the first half of the poem having 8 lines (an octave) and the second half 6 lines, (a sestet).įrom the title alone, we can already identify that the subject of this poem is something Owen feels very passionate about.
